- Summary of Job Description: As direct teacher of Spanish, provide an excellent, high-quality experience for the children in Primaria, a pre-K/Kindergarten classroom for children ages 4-6. Primaria teachers work as a team to provide a rich, nurturing environment in which the arts, science, literacy, math and Spanish are taught daily through projects.

Qualifications:
- Native or native-like fluency in speaking, reading and writing Spanish.
- (AA/AS) or equivalent; one to three years’ related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Bachelor’s degree (BA/BS) preferred.
- 12 units of child development.
- Coursework or experience in language teaching.
- Background or special talents in visual and/or performing arts or science a plus.
- Current CPR and first aid certification.
- Knowledge of and disposition toward teaching using a project-based, thematic approach; openness to child- and community-centered education.
- Ability to deal effectively with a diversity of individuals of all ages at all organizational levels.
- Creativity, flexibility, and innovation in working as a team member.
- Understanding of and commitment to the Peregrine School’s mission.
Job Description:
- Works collaboratively with the head teacher and other Primaria teaching staff to develop projects and themes to support an innovative, exploratory curriculum.
- Plans, implements and evaluates the Spanish program for the pre-k/kg students.
- Is directly involved in planning and leading lessons and activities designed to promote physical, mental, and social development; organizes small group instruction and other activities in Spanish, including thematic projects, storytelling, music, and arts and crafts. music, and storytelling.
- Practices positive discipline techniques. Contributes to ensuring that the classroom remains physically and emotionally safe for children at all times.
- Demonstrates a high level of professionalism in dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.
- Sits down to family-style lunch and snack with Primaria children, teaching and practicing table manners. Assists children in hand-washing and toileting.
- Assists with child portfolios as instructed by the head teacher. Portfolios on each child include photographs, narrative descriptions, developmental assessments, observations of each child, etc.
- Greets parents arriving each day and offers all parents an update on their child’s day at pick-up time. Interacts with enrolled families in a professional and courteous manner to answer questions, provide information, and address concerns; redirects parents to the head teacher, directors, bookkeeper, or administration if necessary.
- Participates in parent-teacher conferences on each child, once in the fall and once in the spring, as assigned by the head teacher.
- Keeps classroom clean and ready for each day, providing a variety of materials and resources for children to explore, manipulate and use, both in learning activities and imaginative play.
- Ensures that the yard is cleaned up often and kept neat, assists with maintenance of school garden.
Hours: Peregrine School’s Primaria program includes curriculum hours from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and day care hours before and after school from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. five days a week. Teachers work all or part of these shifts. The particular duties vary according to the shift. Some Primaria teachers work only during curriculum hours, while others also complete time in the day care. This is a professional job which will run for ten months (September 2012 through June 2013).
Compensation: This is a salaried position with the salary negotiated in relation to the qualifications of the candidate.
Benefits: Medical insurance is partially funded by Peregrine School through a group plan for staff working more than 25 hours/week.

*Substitute Teacher
We are currently accepting applications for substitute teachers and aides for all Peregrine School programs: Escuelita (ages 2-4), Primaria (pre-K/Kindergarten, ages 4-6) and Elementary (grades 1-6).
Qualifications: Associate's degree (AA/AS) or equivalent; one-to-three years related experience. Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) preferred. Twelve units of ECE or equivalent preferred. Willingness to work with others to create a positive, child-centered classroom community.
Compensation: $9/hour. Hours will vary as our programs operate between 7:00 am - 6:00 pm.
