FALL 2017 AFTER SCHOOL CLASSES

MONDAY

Peregrine Writers’ Workshop
with Chris Erickson
grades 3 to 6
3:30 to 5:00 p.m.
Are you a writer? Short stories, poems, flash fiction, graphic novels, movie scripts? Now’s your chance to hone your craft and write better STUFF with the help of professional writers and editors and to get college writing workshop-style feedback from peers and teachers. The Peregrine Writers’ Workshop brings together students and writing professionals for a trimester-long workshop designed to guide the creative writing project you have in mind. During the workshop, you will be submitting work for publication in literary magazines and contests, as well as self-publishing your own zines and chapbooks. You will also have the opportunity to share your work in the community through public readings.
$125 (10 sessions, includes a $15 materials fee)

Musical Theatre
with Kristine Hager and Amber Bianchi
grades pre-K to 6
4:00 to 5:00 p.m. Monday and 4:15 to 5:15 p.m. Friday*
Do you love to dance, sing, and act? This class gives students the opportunity to create their own choreography and incorporate their own unique sense of style into a musical theatre performance which will be presented at the end of the trimester. Based on the ages and the number of students enrolled, we will either put together a short musical or learn and perform classic pieces from a variety of musical plays. All are encouraged to come and share their talent and have fun singing and dancing.
$245 (20 sessions, includes a $20 materials fee)

TUESDAY

Embodied, Mindful Movement (Yoga)
with Roxanne Rashedi
grades pre-K to 6
This course is a kid-friendly mind body activity that combines breath regulation and relaxation exercises, deliberate movement-based sequences, and song. Your child will engage in mindful movement activities among a community of peers and will learn how to tap into their creativity through movement, peer interaction, and through reflective drawing activities that follow the movement portion of class. These classes are suitable for all levels. Please bring a yoga mat for your child.

Cooking I – FULL
with Michelle Sonoda

3:15 to 4:45 p.m.
Let’s explore the world of cooking. We will learn cooking basics, such as knife skills and stove safety, then build on our cooking knowledge with new recipes each week. From homemade pesto to french toast, we will work together to master new dishes. Students will get to try all the foods they make, and some weeks will even bring home treats like fresh bread dough. At the end of the course, students will take home a recipe book, along with their newfound skills.
$170 (10 sessions, includes a $40 materials fee)

WEDNESDAY

Peregrine Chess Team – FULL
with John Langreck

This course is an introduction to chess as well as an opportunity for those students who have previously played to develop their skills. The emphasis is on fun and learning. We engage every child that attends to improve their cognitive thinking and develop a lifelong appreciation for the game.
$150 (10 sessions)

Cooking II – FULL

Coding and Math Games (taught in Mandarin) – FULL

Combining math, logic, and Chinese language learning, this class exposes the students to the world of computer coding in fun and collaborative ways. Learning through games and hands-on materials gives students a solid early start in digital literacy.
$105 (10 sessions, includes $15 materials fee)

THURSDAY

Spanish
with Malu Brown
grades K to 6
The “Risas y Sonrisas” Spanish After School Program is a kid-friendly program that introduces children to the Spanish language with catchy songs, games, colorful visual aids and practical conversation. The classes are focused on comprehension, using a multi-sensory, holistic approach. Registration to the program includes access to a Flashbased Online Program, from any internet-connected and flash enabled device, to review and practice everything the students learn in class.
$140 (10 sessions, includes a $15 materials fee)
Spanish I focuses on pronunciation, reading skills, colors, shapes, emotions, greetings, numbers 1-100. masculine/ feminine concept, body, directions, songs, Q&As, and skits.
Thursdays 3:15 to 4:30 p.m.
Spanish II focuses on verbs, personal pronouns, present, past, future concept, family, opposites, wild animals, school, days, months, seasons, weather, polite words, songs, Q&As, and skits.
Thursdays 4:30 to 5:45 p.m.

Acrylic Painting I
with Marta Juliao
grades K to 2
4:30 to 6:00 p.m.
Over this ten-week course, students will make their own landscape masterpiece on a canvas sized 11” x 14” using acrylic paints. All materials will be provided including one canvas, paints and brushes. The medium is artist-grade acrylics on pre-stretched canvas with staple-free and painted edges to allow for displaying the artwork without a frame. Students will learn and improve their fine motor skills, how to use different brushes and strokes according to what is being painted, how to choose colors according to desired texture, and attention to detail.
$145 (10 sessions, includes a $20 materials fee)

FRIDAY

Beginning Tae Kwon Do
with Nicole Chin
grades K to 6
3:15 to 4:00 p.m.
Come and learn basic blocks, kicks, forms, and rolls! Children will learn defensive skills and safety. At the end of the trimester, they will demonstrate their skills and break boards. Throughout the trimester, the instructor will assess each student’s progress toward their first belt. Applicable students will be able to test and potentially earn this belt at a special ceremony at the end of the trimester.
$145 (10 sessions, includes a $25 materials fee)*

*Tae Kwon Do materials fee does not include the ghee (uniform) and belt ($37 approx.) for students expecting to test for belts in November. Families of applicable students will be contacted in October.
