Fall 2019 ELEMENTARY AFTER SCHOOL CLASSES

After School classes are held on a trimesterly basis at Peregrine's south campus for elementary-aged students. Subjects vary from trimester to trimester. Fall 2019 classes will be held September 16 through November 22, 2019 with the exception of Mandarin Clay Crafting (See below for details). All fall classes will run for 10 sessions. The registration deadline is September 9 at 12:00 p.m. All registrations made after 12:00 p.m. on September 9, 2019 will be subject to a $20 late enrollment surcharge. Questions? Chorus+

with Tamara Maximovich | grades K-6

Through collaborative activities and vocal exercises, students will explore their voices and how teamwork creates freedom of expression in music. They will learn the basics of singing like breath, posture, and music fundamentals starting with scales and arpeggios. Students will help choose the music and will perform a short concert at the end of the final class. Its more than your average Chorus class! Recommended for students with little to no vocal training interested in developing their technical skill.

Sculpture

with Melissa Uroff |grades K-6 

Students will learn to create art by using everyday objects. They will be encouraged to think outside of the box, to look at everyday objects in new and interesting ways, and to push themselves out of their comfort zone. Students will learn the basics of collage and assemblage, explore artwork throughout the Dada period and Surrealism, create a found object sculpture, a sculpture from vegetables, and a collage/assemblage piece. Artists explored include Marcel Duchamp, Hannah Höch, Salvador Dali, Robert Rauschenberg and more. Artwork created throughout the class will be exhibited in an art show at the end of the trimester.

Printmaking

with Melissa Uroff |grades K-6 

Students will explore printmaking and explore a variety of genres of art that is rooted in the medium. Students will be introduced to historical and contemporary fine art prints with studio practice in block printing, cyanotypes, and wheat pasting. Artists explored include Victoria Villasana, DAIN, Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Anna Adkins and more. Artwork created throughout the class will be exhibited in an art show at the end of the trimester.

Mandarin Math

with Mei Yan Lin |grades K-2 

Combining math, logic, and Chinese language learning, this class exposes the students to mathematics in fun and collaborative ways. Learning through games and hands-on materials gives students a solid early start in numerical literacy and language acquisition.

Lego STEM Enrichment

with Play Well |grades K-6 

Power up your engineering skills with Play-Well TEKnologies and tens of thousands of LEGO® parts! Apply real-world concepts in physics, engineering, and architecture through engineer-designed projects such as Catapults, Pneumatic Cranes, Arch Bridges, and the Battletrack! Design and build as never 
before, and explore your craziest ideas with the guidance of a Play-Well instructor.

with Tom Corbett | grades K-6

This class is designed for players of all ages who are brand-new to the game or have basic knowledge of the the game, pieces, and their possible moves. Tom emphasizes the fundamental rules of play, basic tactics and strategies, problem solving, teamwork, sportsmanship, and the importance of playing informal games with family and friends.

Acrylic Painting Techniques

with Marta Juliao and Cristina Puente | grades K-6

Over this ten-week course, students will learn acrylic painting techniques through producing an 11" x 14" work on a canvas with artist-grade acrylics. Painted edges on the finished product to allow for displaying the artwork without a frame. Students will improve their fine motor skills, learn how to use different brushes and strokes, how to choose colors according to desired texture, and attention to detail.

Chess II

with Tom Corbett | grades K-6

This class is designed for players of all ages who have mastered the basics of the game. Tom emphasizes the fundamental rules of play, basic tactics and strategies, problem solving, teamwork, sportsmanship, and the importance of playing informal games with family and friends. Parents are advised to check in with Tom regarding placement. Please email chess@peregrineschool.org.

Mandarin Clay Crafting

with Kimberly Liu | grades K-6

Students will hand-make their own colorful projects from plants to animals and anything they can imagine in-between through guided lessons supplemented by their own innovative ideas. Sculptures develop fine motor skills and attention to detail. The instructor speak mainly in Mandarin with some English to help those students who are still learning.

Fridays 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. | $245

KESTREL CLUB (ELEMENTARY DAY CARE)

for Peregrine School students only

What is Kestrel Club? Kestrel Club provides semi-structured enrichment activities outside of the elementary curriculum hours of 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Activities vary day-to-day depending on group size, student ages, and weather. Families interested in consistent, guaranteed weekly activities geared toward developing specific skills and talents should take advantage of After School classes.

billed $387 on Sep 1, Oct 1, Nov 1, Dec 1 

Kestrel Club may only be added or dropped during After School registration periods. Families who do not enroll in Kestrel Club will be subject to the Extra Hours rate of $12 per hour. Peregrine students enrolled in After School classes receive free aftercare only between 3:00 p.m. and the end of their After School classes (on applicable dates) with a 10-minute grace period for pick up. Please note that Kestrel Club is only free for these students on the dates that After School classes run. 

ABOUT OUR INSTRUCTORS

 

Kimberly Liu

Kimberly has promoted clay figurine art in Sacramento and the Bay Area since 2013. She combines traditional Asian dough figurine art with western designs and skills, resulting in unique creations. She have shown her work at various cultural and art exhibitions. Kimberly currently operates a clay art Instagram account with over 20,000 followers.

Melissa Uroff is a California based artist and photographer. She loves to mix mediums and often dabbles in printmaking, painting, drawing, collage and assemblage. When she is not making art you can find her curating art and music shows, DJing vinyl, playing her accordion and travelling every available chance.

Mei Yan Lin

Mei Yan Lin (Teacher Mei or Lin laoshi) previously worked as a medical doctor in China. In recent years she has been working at public schools as a para educator and acting as Mandarin translator. She also has two daughters who both speak fluent Chinese. She looks forward to teaching Mandarin through math concepts and games.

Tom Corbett

Tom Corbett learned chess as a child and went on to compete in youth and adult chess tournaments. He has taught chess to elementary students in both group and individual settings. In addition to technical chess competency, Tom emphasizes the importance of playing informal games with family and friends.

Marta Juliao

Marta Juliao is a nature lover who delights in painting landscapes. Originally from Colombia, she has been teaching painting and Spanish in the US for 23 years. Marta has shown her work at several art shows throughout California, most recently at The Clayground Gallery in Winters in April, 2017.

Tamara Maximovich

Tamara is a senior music student at UC Davis. She has been singing since she was very young and tried in as many instruments as she could get her hands on. She has performed in many theatres in North California and given private voice lessons in the San Francisco Bay Area.  Her passion is bringing music into the lives of others through the enrichment of singing and learning.

Play Well TEKnologies

Play-Well TEKnologies provides project based programs designed to teach principles and methods of engineering to children. Their curriculum is designed by engineers, and builds on math and science skills students learn during the school year. They engage students in solving real-world engineering challenges that explore concepts in physics, architecture, and engineering.
